First Chiropractic Visit: What to Expect

What to Expect at Your First Chiropractic Visit in Salisbury, MA
Most people who book a first appointment here have one of two worries. Either they have never been to a chiropractor and do not know what happens, or they have been to one before and remember being on and off a table in four minutes with no idea what was wrong with them. Here is what your visit with us actually looks like, start to finish.
What happens at a first chiropractic appointment?
Your first visit is a consultation and assessment with the doctor. Nothing gets recommended before we have examined you, and nothing gets recommended based on what you filled out on a form.
Expect to be here longer than you would for a typical appointment. There is a conversation, an examination, and time at the end where you get told what we found. Some visits need imaging and some do not, so the length varies by person.
The conversation
You sit down with the doctor and tell your story. How long it has been going on. What set it off, if you know. What you have already tried, including other providers, because that history tells us a lot. And this is the question people are least prepared for: what have you stopped doing because of it?
That last one matters more than the pain scale. Somebody who has quietly stopped picking up their grandkids, or stopped skiing, or stopped sleeping through the night, is telling us what success would look like. We would rather aim at that than at a number between one and ten.
The examination
Then we look at you properly. That includes a posture screen, range of motion testing, and orthopedic and neurological testing to work out whether nerves are involved and where. Motion X-rays get taken when they are indicated by what we find.
If you have had imaging done elsewhere, bring it. An MRI report from two years ago is useful information, and we will go through it with you rather than glance at it. A lot of patients tell us it was the first time anyone walked them through their own images in detail.
Your findings
You get told what we found. Whether we think it can be corrected, what happens if it is left alone, and what correcting it would involve. If we do not think we are the right fit for your situation, we say that and point you toward who is.
We also take a Spinal Health Score baseline, which combines posture, range of motion and nerve function into one measure. It is the starting line, and it gets re-measured later so progress is something you can see rather than something you estimate from how a given week went.
What should I bring to my first chiropractic visit?
- Comfortable clothes. Something you can move in. You do not need workout gear, just avoid anything stiff or restrictive.
- Any imaging you already have. X-rays, MRI or CT reports, on a disc, in an app, or as a photo of the report on your phone. All of it helps.
- A list of your medications. Including anything you take for pain, even over the counter.
- Your history, including the parts that seem unrelated. Past surgeries, a car accident in your twenties, a bone density result, cancer treatment. Some of that changes what is appropriate for you, and we would rather know before than after.
Arrive ten minutes early and you will have time for the paperwork without feeling rushed through it.
Will I get adjusted on my first visit?
That depends on what the examination shows. Some findings mean an adjustment is appropriate straight away. Others mean we want imaging back first, because there are conditions where the right move is to slow down rather than get started.
Nobody here is going to do something to your spine before knowing what is in it. If that means the first visit is mostly examination, that is what it is.
Does a chiropractic adjustment hurt?
For most people, no. There is often a popping sound, which is gas releasing from the fluid in the joint, the same thing that happens when you crack a knuckle. It is not bone, and it is not anything breaking.
Some patients feel mild soreness for a day afterward, similar to how you feel after doing an exercise you have not done in a while. That usually settles quickly. If something is uncomfortable during a visit, say so. We adjust what we are doing.
Nervous about the neck? Say that out loud at your appointment. There is more than one way to work on a neck, and knowing you are anxious about it changes how we approach the visit. It is a common thing to be uneasy about and nobody here will talk you out of the feeling.
How do I know if I even need a chiropractor?
Fair question. You find out by getting looked at, but the patterns we see most often are worth knowing:
- Pain that keeps coming back after settling down, covered in more depth on our chronic back pain relief page
- Pain, numbness or tingling running into an arm or a leg, which usually means a nerve is involved
- An old injury that never fully resolved and now flares under load
- Stiffness that is worse in the morning or after sitting
- Headaches that seem to start in the neck
You can see the full range on our conditions we treat page. If your situation is not on there, call and ask. We would rather tell you on the phone that we are not the right fit than have you drive over for it.
Where is the office and who will I see?
We are at 175 Elm Street, Suite 4, in Salisbury, MA, a short drive from Newburyport, Amesbury, Seabrook and Hampton. Patients come to us from across the North Shore and southern New Hampshire.
Dr. Jeff leads every new patient evaluation. Dr. Jake handles adjusting alongside him. Alyssa tracks patients through their care, Lorena runs booking and scheduling, and Hailey runs the therapy bay where decompression, laser and shockwave sessions happen. It is a small team, and you will get to know all of them.
The short version
Your first visit is a conversation about what is going on and what it has cost you, followed by a real examination, followed by being told what we found. You will leave knowing where you stand. Bring comfortable clothes, any imaging you have, and your history. Whether anything gets done to your spine that day depends on what the exam turns up.
