Patient Journey: Overcoming Post-Concussion Symptoms and Returning to Sports
At Newman Chiropractic, we understand the profound impact concussions can have on young athletes. This patient journey showcases how our specialized care helped a middle school student recover from long-term post-concussion symptoms and return to an active lifestyle. (Details have been adjusted to protect patient privacy.)
Initial Concern: Persistent Post-Concussion Symptoms
A middle school student sustained a concussion during a soccer game, leading to two years of lingering symptoms such as difficulty focusing, drowsiness, irritability, and dizziness. Despite seeing primary care physicians, a neurologist, and physical therapists, the symptoms persisted, affecting both academic performance and the ability to participate in sports.
Evaluation: Uncovering the Root Cause
When the student visited our office, we conducted a comprehensive evaluation and discovered significant muscle tightness in the suboccipital region, which is closely linked to the brainstem. This area is often affected in concussions, potentially leading to symptoms that mimic long-term post-concussion effects.
Understanding this connection, we recognized that addressing the tightness and dysfunction in the upper cervical region could be the key to the patient’s recovery.
Treatment Plan: Gentle and Adaptive Care
Given the sensitivity of the condition, we started with very gentle adjustments and soft tissue work. The treatment plan was carefully modified three times within the first two weeks to ensure the patient’s comfort and to optimize the effectiveness of the care.
Over the course of six visits, the patient’s symptoms—previously thought to be long-term effects of the concussion—resolved completely. This significant improvement allowed the student to regain focus in school, reduce irritability and drowsiness, and return to an active lifestyle free of dizziness and other debilitating symptoms.
Ongoing Care: Ensuring Long-Term Success
Now that the student has returned to sports, we continue to provide monthly check-ins to monitor their progress and maintain their health. During sports seasons, the frequency of treatments increases to address the added physical demands and ensure the student remains symptom-free. The consistent care helps maintain their well-being and prevents the recurrence of symptoms.
